HIDDEN ASSETS: MUSEUM RESEARCH ACROSS MID-AMERICA
Small, rural museums fill an important role in their communities. They often are the only cultural assets in their towns, but despite this role, they tend to lack the resources to sustain or improve their facilities, operations, and collections.
The struggles of small museums are no different than those of other businesses and organizations in these same towns. However, 60% of all American museums are located in small, rural communities. The overall health and strength of American museums depends on the health and strength of these institutions.
The good news is that these “hidden assets” have much to offer. Despite challenges, small museums are eager to maintain and expand their place in their communities.
